In 2011, Zhao Meiying, a student from Tangde Primary School in wudongde Town, Luquan County, Yunnan Province, always hiked over the mountain to the school carrying the woods which could be used in a week and half a masket of potatoes. The shoes made by her grandmother usually worn quickly because of this. She had no alternative but face her fate.
In the year 2015, four years after Free Lunch Project had served the first meal in her school, 12-year-old Zhao Meiying, wearing smart short hair and much taller than before, no longer had to carry the heavy basket though the way to her school remained unchanged. Then she became to show more smiles.
Children: Each meal included meat, and they could say goodbye to carrying the woods to school.
In the past four years, Xiaoying no longer carried woods to school. She recalled her previous way to school and found it a little vague. She had seen her companions falling down, crying with the woods here and there on the ground for many times. She had to walked carefully enough." I have never fell down, but I cannot cook well," she said. The reason why she couldn't cook well was that she was too young, so what she ate was either potatoes or cold rice.
After having free lunch, Xiaoying no longer cooked meals herself at school. She could have three dishes including meat after the class at 10:30 every day.
Teachers: Children were obviously much healthier than before.
Five teachers worked at Tangde Primary School, and four of them are the 80's. Liu Jie, one of those teachers, majored in medicine, once examined his students when he first came to this primary school. The examination included height and weight tests. "You can easily imagine that these students are almost suffering from malnutrition. They are thin, short and pale. If we have PE lessons in afternoon, many students will be fainted," said Liu.
During these four years, Liu observed obvious changes of students though he could see them every day.
Liu said that the best thing was that students' study and life can be guaranteed, and he was appreciative to those who had contributed to his students.
Parents: Children had better meals at school than those at home and enjoyed going to school.
Pan Fumei was a cook who cooked the free lunch. Her son also profited from the Free Lunch Project. She told us that many parents found their children was healthier and stronger than before and they were very grateful. Some dropouts went back to school instead of pasturing the cattle because of the better free lunch at school. They were on top of the world.
